Dive into the exciting world of theatre and discover the magic of the stage! Young actors use their tools of body, voice, mind, and imagination as they begin to develop their budding acting skills. Activities may include fun warm ups to get the body and mind ready to inhabit a character as well as acting and improvisation games that encourage creativity and quick thinking. Improvisers explore advanced character creation, storytelling, and the nature of ensemble work, all while honing a rapier-like wit. Students explore advanced improv techniques, including long-form improv, scene work, and character development while also developing skills in active listening, spontaneity, and creativity. - : Crafting Your Life Into Story
Learn how to identify several pivotal events of your life and shape one of them into a work of fiction or non-fiction. Following a tried-and-true formula (“Once upon a time . . . . Then, one day . . .”), you will learn how to identify, begin, and structure an autobiographical story, whether fiction or non-fiction. Participants will finish the workshop with the plots of at least three new autobiographical works, a two-page beginning of a new essay, story, novel, or memoir, or a revised beginning of their work-in-progress. - : Waverly Street Gallery Presents: Smoke, New Ceramics by Kanika Sircar
In her exhibition, Smoke, Kanika Sircar’s stoneware forms, referring to chimneys, antique furnaces or balloons, are layered with slips, glazes and iron prints. Surface imagery includes dark, sooty clouds, old maps of the solar system, fragments of Galileo’s Sidereus Nuncius, and the first poem of the Rg Veda, the Hymn to the Sun. There will be an opening reception Friday, September 13 from 6-8PM. Waverly Street Gallery is located at 4600 East West Highway.
- : The Trawick Prize Exhibition
Founded by Carol Trawick in 2003, The Trawick Prize honors visual artists in all mediums from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Abasiama and her husband Ukpong are Nigerian immigrants studying and living in Texas in the 1970s. Ukpong is exhilarated by the promises of America, but Abasiama is homesick and frustrated by Ukpong’s frequent absences. As Abasiama struggles with the physical pain of her pregnancy, the demands of work and schooling, the isolation of being away from her family, and the uncertainty of her future, an unexpected community inspires her to forge her own path. The first play in Mfoniso Udofia’s epic nine-part Ufot Cycle depicting the Nigerian-American experience, Sojourners is a “moving and powerful” (The New York Times) testament to the complexity of the American dream.
