“Paint Bethesda” is an art contest and exhibition that will feature outdoor paintings of downtown Bethesda. Interested artists are asked to submit images of the buildings, icons, scenes, or landmarks of downtown Bethesda that they have painted, along with a selection of images of their past works. Artists are invited to come to downtown Bethesda at their convenience to paint plein air the scene or building of their choice. Artists may also take photographs of the Bethesda icon they’re painting and paint in studio.
All submissions will be reviewed by jury, and the deadline to apply is October 9, 2026. The contest is open to residents of Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. High school artists are also encouraged to apply.

Best in Show – $2,500
Second Place – $1,000
Third Place – $500
High School Artist* – $500
*High school student currently enrolled in the 26-27 school year may be awarded this prize.
The Jurors will select up to 20 finalists who will be invited to display their work in a group exhibition at The Writer’s Center in downtown Bethesda in December 2026.
Eligibility
Artists must be 18 years of age or older and permanent, full-time residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. Works may be completed “plein air”, in studio, or a combination of both. Works must feature a scene, building, icon, or landmark found within the defined competition boundaries located here. All works on paper must be framed and ready to hang. No reproductions. Maximum artwork size is 48″ high by 36″ wide. Artists may submit up to three paintings for consideration. Artwork must have been completed within the last three years and must be available for the duration of the December 2026 exhibition at The Writer’s Center.
The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District will collect a 40% commission on any artwork that is sold during the exhibition. Artwork does not have to be for sale at the exhibition. Selected artists must deliver and pick up artwork to and from The Writer’s Center.
