Readers in Grades 4-6! Join “No Shelf Control,” a book discussion group for kids 9-12. This month we’ll discuss “Efrén Divided” by Ernesto Cisneros, a story of family and friendship across borders. Efrén Nava’s three-generational Mexican American family is close-knit and hardworking, but his parents harbor a secret. Once it is discovered, Efrén must take on unusual responsibilities for a boy his age and try to navigate life across both physical and cultural borders between two countries. In observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month, this month we will discuss Ernesto Cisnero’s “Efrén Divided,” the 2021 medal winner of the Pura Belpré Award for “outstanding works of literature for children and young adults that best portray, affirm, and celebrate the Latino cultural experience.”
You can borrow a copy of the book, along with a specially prepared reading guide for our group, from the Connie Morella Library; just ask at either the Circulation Desk or Information Desk for the book for the October meeting of No Shelf Control.
