SUMMARY:My First Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Children in Grades K-1 can practice their reading skills through group reading\, activities & games based on beginner reader books. Each session will focus on a different theme. Caregivers must attend. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy First Book Club is a reading program designed to provide students in grades K-1 a unique opportunity to improve literacy and language arts skills through group reading\, discussion\, and related activities. Participants should be attending kindergarten or first grade\, or the equivalent\, but do not need to know how to read independently yet. This program does not teach kids how to read but rather serves as a fun and interactive way for beginning readers to practice reading aloud\, listening to others read\, and talking about stories and characters and language arts concepts\, such as theme and setting. \nEach session will focus on 1-2 short books with related discussion\, activities\, games\, and/or crafts. You do not need to read the book(s) ahead of time! Copies of the books will be provided by the library at the event\, and everyone will have the choice to volunteer to read aloud\, including adult caregivers and the librarians. Questions and discussion topics will be carefully structured to promote skills such as reading comprehension\, word recognition\, pronunciation\, and vocabulary-building. \nMy First Book Club can serve as a transition for kids ages 5-6 who have advanced from typical library pre-school Storytimes but might not yet be ready for elementary school programs like a traditional book club. Key goals are to get them excited about reading on their own and show them how to find books and use various learning resources that are available from the library and the librarians. The program is inclusive: regardless of a child’s initial reading abilities\, the goal is to help them improve their skills and confidence by engaging with the reading materials and other kids in a supportive learning environment.

SUMMARY:No Shelf Control!
DESCRIPTION:Calling all readers ages 9-12: No Shelf Control is the place for you! Pick up a copy of “The Island of Forgotten Gods” by Victor Pineiro ahead of time and join us for tonight’s discussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTwelve-year-old Nico needs to escape from his feuding parents and his rejection by a New York art school. He goes to Puerto Rico to spend the summer with his grandmother and cousins there and hopefully fulfill his dream of making a fantastic documentary movie. But things take a horrific turn when they encounter the legendary chupacabra\, a cult\, and the gods who created the island. In addition to being an exciting fantasy/adventure story and a novel about personal transformation\, Victor Pineiro’s “The Island of Forgotten Gods” contains an introduction to the history\, culture\, and mythology of Puerto Rico\, the Caribbean islands\, and the Taino people who lived there for centuries before the arrival of Europeans after 1492. Fans of Rick Riordan\, any of the Rick Riordan Presents series\, mythology\, or sci-fi/fantasy will love this book! \nYou can borrow a copy of “The Island of Forgotten Gods” by Victor Pineiro\, along with a specially prepared reading guide for our group\, from the Connie Morella Library; just ask at either the Circulation Desk or Information Desk for the book for the April meeting of No Shelf Control. The book is also available in electronic format through the library’s free electronic resources: on the Libby app or mcplmd.overdrive.com as an e-book or e-audiobook; or on the Hoopla app or hoopladigital.com as an e-book or e-audiobook. mcplmd.overdrive.com. If you use an electronic version\, please contact librarian Jeff Coster (Jeffrey.Coster@montgomerycountymd.gov) to request a copy of the reading guide. He can also be contacted with any questions about the program and participant eligibility.

SUMMARY:Daniella Mestyanek Young Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a riveting talk from cult survivor\, veteran and author Daniella Mestyanek Young. Daniella was born a third-generation member of the infamous Children of God religious cult\, and grew up being trafficked around the world\, before escaping that life and moving to America at age 15. She put herself through high school and graduated as college valedictorian before commissioning into the US Army as an intelligence officer. That’s where she really started to think about group behavior…and seeing it\, well\, everywhere. She will be reading from her new book\, The Culting of America\, as well as answering questions. A Q&A\, and book sales and signing will follow. \nMost of us think we’d never fall for a cult. We picture robes\, chanting\, and remote compounds. But toxic groups don’t just exist on the fringe. They thrive in boardrooms\, group chats\, fitness classes\, political rallies\, religious groups\, and corporate retreats—anywhere we seek identity\, purpose\, and belonging. The Culting of America reveals how cultish behavior isn’t just thriving in modern life—it’s hiding in plain sight\, woven deep into the fabric of American identity. \nWhether you’re part of a church\, company\, fandom\, or political movement\, the question isn’t if you’re in a cult\, it’s how much of yourself you’ve already lost. \nYou can find Daniella Mestyanek Young’s books in our catalog here.

SUMMARY:No Shelf Control: A Book Club for Grades 4-6
DESCRIPTION:Calling all readers ages 9-12: No Shelf Control is the place for you! Pick up a copy of “Property of the Rebel Librarian” and join us tonight for a discussion of middle school readers and censorship. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen June Harper’s parents discover she’s reading a book called “The Making of a Witch\,” they become deeply concerned that her middle school librarian has stocked the shelves with material not appropriate for kids that age. Enough of the community and school administration agree and remove a wide range of authors and subjects from the collection\, implementing a ban on even bringing certain books into school. June realizes she’s not alone in opposing this and works with other avid tweenage readers to find ways to secretly pass around and read books that they’ve loved and want to read. When the identity of the “rebel librarian” is uncovered\, what will be the consequences? How should parents\, teachers\, and librarians balance access to reading material with their desire to shield their students and children from certain language\, topics\, and ideas until they’re older?
