SUMMARY:Bethesda Reads: Crossing to Safety
DESCRIPTION:Interested in joining? The Book Club meets the second Thursday of each month from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. We’ll talk over the book Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. \nThe book chosen for this month’s discussion is Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. This story follows the enduring friendship between two couples: the Morgans—young\, gifted\, and full of dreams yet lacking prospects—and the Langs\, wealthy and generous enough to share their good fortune. Beginning in the 1930s as struggling professors in Wisconsin\, their lives intertwine across decades of triumphs and trials. Through themes of marriage\, ambition\, compromise\, and the quiet resilience of human connection\, the narrative reflects a timeless truth: holding fast to what truly matters\, even as the years slip away. \nCopies of this book will be available at the check out desk\, while supplies last.

SUMMARY:Cover to Cover: Gracie Under the Waves
DESCRIPTION:Readers in Grades 2-3: Join us this month to discuss “Gracie Under the Waves” by Linda Sue Park\, a story of unexpected friendship\, adventure\, and discovery on a snorkeling vacation in the Caribbean. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGracie Kim loves snorkeling. She researches and talks her parents into booking an affordable family vacation to an island in the Caribbean Sea near the world’s second-largest coral reef. What happens to her then is a roller-coaster of thoughts and emotions\, as she experiences joy\, wonder\, pain\, disappointment\, fear\, and courage while dealing with her highly active younger brother\, Ben; a family of scientists who work in preserving and studying the reef; and the wonders and dangers of the ocean. \nJoin us for Cover to Cover on May 19 to discuss “Grace Under the Waves” by Linda Sue Park\, which you can borrow from the Circulation or Information desks at the Connie Morella Library\, along with the specially prepared reading guide. Just ask for the May book for “Cover to Cover!” You can also borrow electronic versions of the novel through the library’s free apps: as either an ebook or e-audiobook on Libby (or online at mcplmd.overdrive.com)\, or as an ebook or e-audiobook on Hoopla (or online at hoopladigital.com). If you use an electronic version\, please contact librarian Jeff Coster (jeffrey.coster@montgomerycountymd.gov) for a copy of the reading guide prepared specially for our group.

SUMMARY:"Our Earth" Book Discussion Club
DESCRIPTION:Come\, share your ideas and learn more about environmental topics in this space for thoughtful exchange\, around fiction and non-fiction books. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nStarting from a common base to have real discussions about the environment\, this book discussion club is a great way to deepen ideas\, have respectful debates while listening to the points of view of others and broaden our understanding and vision on this important topic. Together\, we may discover new forms of commitment and imagine new sustainable and desirable horizons. \nThis month’s selection is Fen\, bog & swamp: a short history of peatland destruction and its role in the climate crisis\, by Annie Proulx. “From Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Proulx – whose novels are infused with her knowledge and deep concern for the earth – comes an urgent and riveting history of wetlands\, their ecological role and how the loss of them threatens the planet. Fens\, bogs\, swamps and marine estuaries are the earth’s most desirable and dependable resources\, and in four illuminating parts Proulx documents the emergence of their systemic destruction in the pursuit of profit and the consequent release of their stored carbon. Wide-ranging and idiosyncratic\, Proulx’s explanation of wetlands takes readers to the fens of sixteenth-century England\, Canada’s Hudson Bay Lowlands\, Russia’s Great Vasyugan Mire and America’s Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and introduces the nineteenth-century explorers who launched the ravaging of the Amazon rainforest. Proulx was born in the 1930s\, a time\, as she says\, when ‘in the ever-continuing name of progress\, Western countries busily raped their own and other countries of minerals\, timber\, fish and wildlife.’ Fen\, Bog & Swamp is both a revelatory history and an urgent plea for wetland reclamation from a writer whose passionate devotion to observing and preserving the environment is on glorious display.” — Provided by publisher. \nA limited number of copies will be available at the Check Out Desk\, or you can borrow a digital copy from our online collection here.

SUMMARY:Mystery Book Club: Good Girl\, Bad Girl
DESCRIPTION:Come join the Connie Morella Mystery book club! We will be reading mysteries\, thrillers and whodunits together every month. This May\, we will be discussing Good Girl\, Bad Girl by Michael Robotham. \nA girl is discovered hiding in a secret room in the aftermath of a terrible crime. Half-starved and filthy\, she won’t tell anyone her name\, or her age\, or where she came from. Maybe she is twelve\, maybe fifteen. She doesn’t appear in any missing persons file\, and her DNA can’t be matched to an identity. Six years later\, still unidentified\, she is living in a secure children’s home with a new name\, Evie Cormac. When she initiates a court case demanding the right to be released as an adult\, forensic psychologist Cyrus Haven must determine if Evie is ready to go free. But she is unlike anyone he’s ever met–fascinating and dangerous in equal measure. Evie knows when someone is lying\, and no one around her is telling the truth. \nMeanwhile\, Cyrus is called in to investigate the shocking murder of a high school figure-skating champion\, Jodie Sheehan\, who dies on a lonely footpath close to her home. Pretty and popular\, Jodie is portrayed by everyone as the ultimate girl-next-door\, but as Cyrus peels back the layers\, a secret life emerges–one that Evie Cormac\, the girl with no past\, knows something about. A man haunted by his own tragic history\, Cyrus is caught between the two cases–one girl who needs saving and another who needs justice. What price will he pay for the truth? \nCopies of the book can be picked up at the front desk at the Connie Morella Library\, or you can borrow a digital copy from our online collection here.
