SUMMARY:Bethesda Reads Book Discussion Club: "The Only Woman in the Room"
DESCRIPTION:Interested in joining? The Book Club meets the second Thursday of each month from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm\, meeting room 2. The book chosen for this month’s discussion is The Only Woman in the Room by Marie Benedict. A powerful novel based on the incredible true story of the glamour icon and scientist Hedy Lamarr whose groundbreaking invention revolutionized modern communication. Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else\, she overheard the Third Reich’s plans while at her husband’s side\, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle\, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr\, screen star. But she kept a secret more shocking than her heritage or her marriage: she was a scientist. And she knew a few secrets about the enemy. She had an idea that might help the country fight the Nazis…if anyone would listen to her. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCopies of this book will be available at the check out desk\, while supplies last.

SUMMARY:The Roots of Modern Bethesda Part II -- From Trolley Suburb to Urban Center
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture with Hank Levine! In September\, Bethesda Historical Society Secretary Hank Levine took us through how\, between 1750 and 1920\, geography and advances in transportation set the stage for the development of modern Bethesda. Now Hank returns to tell the story of how in the century after the end of World War I Bethesda became the affluent suburb and urban center we know and (mostly) love today. Join us in person as we explore how the rise of the automobile brought new neighborhoods and a growing central business district; how the zoning and planning ‘wars’ of the 1960’s to 1990’s shaped our community; and how Metro jump-started the growth of a town into a city. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Bethesda Metro Area Village and Connie Morella Library. Free and open to the public. BMAV is a volunteer-driven neighborhood nonprofit that works to build community connections among neighbors through social engagement and recruiting volunteers to help one another. Check out www.bmavillage.org for more information.

SUMMARY:"Our Earth" Book Discussion Club
DESCRIPTION:Starting from a common base to have real discussions about the environment\, this book discussion club is a great way to deepen ideas\, have respectful debates while listening to the points of view of others and broaden our understanding and vision on this important topic. Together\, we may discover new forms of commitment and imagine new sustainable and desirable horizons. \nThis month’s selection is The lost trees of Willow Avenue: a story of climate and hope on one American street\, by Mike Tidwell. A riveting and elegant story of climate change on one city street\, full of surprises and true stories of human struggle and dying local trees – all against the national backdrop of 2023’s record heat domes and raging wildfires and hurricanes. In 2023\, author and activist Mike Tidwell decided to keep a record for a full year of the growing impacts of climate change on his one urban block right on the border with Washington\, DC. A love letter to the magnificent oaks and other trees dying from record heat waves and bizarre rain\, Tidwell’s story depicts the neighborhood’s battle to save the trees and combat climate change: The midwife who builds a geothermal energy system on the block\, the Congressman who battles cancer and climate change at the same time\, and the Chinese-American climate scientist who wants to bury billions of the world’s dying trees to store their carbon and help stabilize the atmosphere. The story goes beyond ailing trees as Tidwell chronicles people on his block sick with Lyme disease\, a church struggling with floods\, and young people anguishing over whether to have kids\, all in the same neighborhood and all against the global backdrop of 2023’s record heat domes and raging wildfires and hurricanes. Then there’s Tidwell himself who explores the ethical and scientific questions surrounding the idea of “geoengineering” as a last-ditch way to save the world’s trees – and human communities everywhere – by reflecting sunlight away from the planet. No book has told the story of climate change this way: hyper local\, full of surprises\, full of true stories of life and death in one neighborhood.

SUMMARY:Mystery Book Club at Connie Morella Library: "Squeeze Me"
DESCRIPTION:Come join the Connie Morella Mystery book club! We will be reading mysteries\, thrillers and whodunits together every month. This November\, we will be discussing Squeeze Me by Carl Hiassen. \nFrom the author of Skinny Dip and Razor Girl\, a hilarious\, New York Times best-selling novel of social and political intrigues\, set against the glittering backdrop of Florida’s gold coast. \nIt’s the height of the Palm Beach charity ball season: for every disease or cause\, there’s a reason for the local luminaries to eat (minimally)\, drink (maximally)\, and be seen. But when a prominent high-society dowager suddenly vanishes during a swank gala\, and is later found dead in a concrete grave\, panic and chaos erupt. Kiki Pew was notable not just for her wealth and her jewels–she was an ardent fan of the Winter White House resident just down the road\, and a founding member of the POTUSSIES\, a group of women dedicated to supporting their President. Never one to miss an opportunity to play to his base\, the President immediately declares that Kiki was the victim of rampaging immigrant hordes. This\, it turns out\, is far from the truth. \nThe truth might just lie in the middle of the highway\, where a bizarre discovery brings the First Lady’s motorcade to a grinding halt (followed by some grinding between the First Lady and a love-struck Secret Service agent). Enter Angie Armstrong\, wildlife wrangler extraordinaire\, who arrives at her own conclusions after she is summoned to the posh island to deal with a mysterious and impolite influx of huge\, hungry pythons . . . \nCopies of the book can be picked up at the front desk at the Connie Morella Library\, or you can borrow a digital copy from our online collection here.
