SUMMARY:No Shelf Control: "The Lost Library"
DESCRIPTION:Calling all readers in grades 4-6! No Shelf Control is a book discussion & activity group just for students age 9-12. This month we’ll discuss “The Lost Library” by Rebecca Stead and Wendy Mass. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvan and his best friend\, Rafe\, spend the summer after fifth grade trying to find out the story behind the sudden appearance of little free library—guarded by a big orange cat named Mortimer—in front of the building that used to be the town’s library before something happened that no one will talk about. “The Lost Library” by award-winning and critically-acclaimed children’s chapter book authors Rebecca Stead and Wendy Mass features a little bit of mystery\, a lot of curiosity\, some local history\, a bit of fantasy\, and a great friendship. It should provide plenty of material for a great discussion and some fun activities in this month’s meeting of No Shelf Control! \nYou can borrow a copy of the book\, along with a specially prepared reading guide for our group\, from the Connie Morella Library; just ask at either the Circulation Desk or Information Desk for the book for the November meeting of No Shelf Control.

SUMMARY:Bethesda Reads Book Discussion Club: "The Only Woman in the Room"
DESCRIPTION:Interested in joining? The Book Club meets the second Thursday of each month from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm\, meeting room 2. The book chosen for this month’s discussion is The Only Woman in the Room by Marie Benedict. A powerful novel based on the incredible true story of the glamour icon and scientist Hedy Lamarr whose groundbreaking invention revolutionized modern communication. Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else\, she overheard the Third Reich’s plans while at her husband’s side\, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle\, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr\, screen star. But she kept a secret more shocking than her heritage or her marriage: she was a scientist. And she knew a few secrets about the enemy. She had an idea that might help the country fight the Nazis…if anyone would listen to her. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCopies of this book will be available at the check out desk\, while supplies last.

SUMMARY:The Roots of Modern Bethesda Part II -- From Trolley Suburb to Urban Center
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture with Hank Levine! In September\, Bethesda Historical Society Secretary Hank Levine took us through how\, between 1750 and 1920\, geography and advances in transportation set the stage for the development of modern Bethesda. Now Hank returns to tell the story of how in the century after the end of World War I Bethesda became the affluent suburb and urban center we know and (mostly) love today. Join us in person as we explore how the rise of the automobile brought new neighborhoods and a growing central business district; how the zoning and planning ‘wars’ of the 1960’s to 1990’s shaped our community; and how Metro jump-started the growth of a town into a city. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Bethesda Metro Area Village and Connie Morella Library. Free and open to the public. BMAV is a volunteer-driven neighborhood nonprofit that works to build community connections among neighbors through social engagement and recruiting volunteers to help one another. Check out www.bmavillage.org for more information.
