This February\, we will be discussing Everyone is Lying to You by Jo Piazza. \nLizzie and Bex were best friends in college. After graduation\, Bex vanished\, leaving Lizzie confused and devastated. \nFifteen years later\, Bex is now Rebecca Sommers\, a “traditional” Instagram influencer with millions of followers who salivate over her perfect life on her ranch with her five children and handsome husband\, Gray. Lizzie is a struggling magazine writer\, watching reels while her young children demand her attention. \nOne night out of the blue\, Bex calls Lizzie with a career-making proposition–an exclusive interview with her about her multimillion-dollar business venture and an invitation to MomBomb\, the high-profile influencing conference. \nAt the conference\, Bex goes missing and Gray is found brutally murdered on their ranch. Lizzie finds herself plunged into the dark side of the cutthroat world of social media that includes jealousy\, sordid affairs\, swingers\, and backstabbing. She must learn who her old friend has become and who she has double-crossed to try to find her\, clear her name\, and maybe even save her life. \nCopies of the book can be picked up at the front desk at the Connie Morella Library\, or you can borrow a digital copy from our online collection here.

SUMMARY:The Life and Legacy of Reverend Josiah Henson
DESCRIPTION:Enslaved; Abolitionist; Methodist Preacher; Underground Railroad conductor; Founder of the Dawn Settlement; Entrepreneur; Author. Presented by the Josiah Henson Museum and Park in Montgomery County. \nJosiah Henson\, born into slavery and scarred by brutal abuse\, overcame illiteracy and physical hardship to gain his freedom\, learn to read\, and become a Methodist preacher and community leader. A man of unwavering moral principles\, he repeatedly returned to the United States via the Underground Railroad to help fugitives settle in Canada\, founded the Dawn Settlement\, and published an 1849 autobiography that inspired Uncle Tom’s Cabin. His story profoundly influenced the abolitionist movement; Abraham Lincoln even credited Henson’s narrative\, alongside Uncle Tom\, as a catalyst for the Civil War. Henson traveled internationally to raise funds\, met Queen Victoria and U.S. President Hayes\, and devoted his later years to advancing education until his death.

SUMMARY:"Our Earth" Book Discussion Club
DESCRIPTION:Come\, share your ideas and learn more about environmental topics in this space for thoughtful exchange\, around fiction and non-fiction books. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nStarting from a common base to have real discussions about the environment\, this book discussion club is a great way to deepen ideas\, have respectful debates while listening to the points of view of others and broaden our understanding and vision on this important topic. Together\, we may discover new forms of commitment and imagine new sustainable and desirable horizons. \nThis month’s selection is Falter: has the human game begun to play itself out\, by Bill McKibben. “Thirty years ago Bill McKibben offered one of the earliest warnings about climate change. Now he broadens the warning: the entire human game\, he suggests\, has begun to play itself out. Bill McKibben’s groundbreaking book The End of Nature — issued in dozens of languages and long regarded as a classic — was the first book to alert us to global warming. But the danger is broader than that: even as climate change shrinks the space where our civilization can exist\, new technologies like artificial intelligence and robotics threaten to bleach away the variety of human experience. Falter tells the story of these converging trends and of the ideological fervor that keeps us from bringing them under control. And then\, drawing on McKibben’s experience in building 350.org\, the first truly global citizens movement to combat climate change\, it offers some possible ways out of the trap. We’re at a bleak moment in human history — and we’ll either confront that bleakness or watch the civilization our forebears built slip away. Falter is a powerful and sobering call to arms\, to save not only our planet but also our humanity.” — Provided by publisher. \nA limited number of copies will be available at the Check Out Desk.

SUMMARY:Tales of Yesterday: Historical Fiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Travel back in time with our historical fiction book club! From political intrigue to daring romances\, every month we visit a different period in time. Join us this March for All We Were Promised by Ashton Lattimore. \n“The paths of three young Black women in pre-Civil War Philadelphia unexpectedly–and dangerously–collide in this dramatic debut novel inspired by the explosive history of a city at war with itself. Philadelphia\, 1837. When nineteen-year-old Charlotte escaped from the deteriorating White Oaks plantation four years ago\, she’d expected freedom to look completely different from her former life as an enslaved housemaid. Instead\, she’s locked away playing servant to her white-passing father\, hiding their past and identities to protect themselves from slavecatchers who would destroy their new lives. Charlotte longs to break away\, but outside the walls of their townhouse\, the City of Brotherly Love is up in arms. Pennsylvania is a free state\, yet abolitionists are struggling to establish a permanent home for the anti-slavery movement\, as southern sympathizers incite violence against free Black people and white vigilantes stalk the streets. Undeterred\, Charlotte sneaks out and forges an unlikely friendship with Nell\, a member of one of Philadelphia’s wealthiest Black families. Nell is under so much pressure from her parents to settle down and marry Alex\, a close family friend\, that the two pretend to get engaged\, just to take the heat off. Meanwhile Nell and Charlotte grow close over their mutual commitment to abolition\, so when Evie\, Charlotte’s enslaved friend from White Oaks\, shows up in the city\, they conspire to help her flee North. Charlotte and her father’s freedom is threatened as she and Nell navigate the abolitionist world’s racial and class politics and ever-present dangers\, struggling to forge a plan to free Evie from slavery before it’s too late. Inspired by the untold history of Pennsylvania Hall\, one of Philadelphia’s landmarks lost to violence\, All We Were Promised is the story of three young Black women–the rebel\, the socialite\, and the fugitive–fighting for each other in an American city straining to live up to its loftiest ideals.”–Publisher description. \nCopies of the book can be picked up at the front desk at the Connie Morella Library\, or you can borrow a digital copy from our online collection here.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk for Deborah Tomlin’s SUTRA
DESCRIPTION:The title SUTRA in sanskrit means to stitch\, to mend\, to bring together\, to heal. This body of work drew Tomlin to a more abstract approach to painting and drawing including the layering of collage materials and stitching directly on the canvas. Text based on comments by doctors and friends during her treatment is also significant to this work. Painting on top of overflowing and overlapping text expresses Tomlin’s grief and anger. Stitching directly on the canvas with yarn and thread reframes her sutures and scars through the lens of darning and mending\, traditionally women’s work\, transforming an object ripped and torn into a material stronger and more beautiful by the act of repair.

SUMMARY:Daniella Mestyanek Young Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a riveting talk from cult survivor\, veteran and author Daniella Mestyanek Young. Daniella was born a third-generation member of the infamous Children of God religious cult\, and grew up being trafficked around the world\, before escaping that life and moving to America at age 15. She put herself through high school and graduated as college valedictorian before commissioning into the US Army as an intelligence officer. That’s where she really started to think about group behavior…and seeing it\, well\, everywhere. She will be reading from her new book\, The Culting of America\, as well as answering questions. A Q&A\, and book sales and signing will follow. \nMost of us think we’d never fall for a cult. We picture robes\, chanting\, and remote compounds. But toxic groups don’t just exist on the fringe. They thrive in boardrooms\, group chats\, fitness classes\, political rallies\, religious groups\, and corporate retreats—anywhere we seek identity\, purpose\, and belonging. The Culting of America reveals how cultish behavior isn’t just thriving in modern life—it’s hiding in plain sight\, woven deep into the fabric of American identity. \nWhether you’re part of a church\, company\, fandom\, or political movement\, the question isn’t if you’re in a cult\, it’s how much of yourself you’ve already lost. \nYou can find Daniella Mestyanek Young’s books in our catalog here.
