About Rennie Harris: Rennie Harris is the Founder, Artistic Director and Choreographer of Rennie Harris Puremovement (RHPM) in Philadelphia. The company sprang from the street and club dance scene in North Philadelphia, where Rennie first amassed his popping and stepping moves as part of the Scanner Boys, a local B-boy crew. Since the age of 15, he has taught workshops and classes at many schools and universities including University of the Arts, UCLA, Columbia College and Bates College. Harris has received awards from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a Pew Repertory Development Initiative grant, the City of Philadelphia Cultural Fund and 1996 Philadelphia Dance Projects Commission. Harris has been compared to 20 th century dance legend Alvin Ailey and Bob Fosse, and was recently awarded the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts.
In 2000, Rennie founded Illadelph Legends Festival, a weeklong hip-hop festival. The festival has grown to include more than 500 participants and tours colleges and festivals, presenting master classes and performances. As hip-hop continues to be chosen as the modern generation’s medium of expression, RHPM works to honor its history, explore its ideas, and further its contributions to the surrounding community.
