Six Washington, D.C. area companies will showcase the regions best dance featuring hip-hop, ballet, modern, stepping and flamenco.

Tickets are not assigned seating. Doors open at 7pm for tickets and will call, open seating begins at 7:30pm.

Aysha Upchurch / Life Rhythm, Move Project, Washington, D.C.
Life, Rhythm, Move Project (LRMP) is more than a dance company; it not only speaks to Aysha Upchurch’s passion for dance, but also to her commitment to social justice. The choreography reflects Aysha’s professional experience as an educator, author, child rights advocate, conflict resolution facilitator, as well as her mission to preserve the integrity of hip-hop culture. On stage the goal is to put on an entertaining show while also provoking deeper thought and discussion. Aysha and LRMP see the community as a source of knowledge and information and the dance stage as a viable venue to bring people together to “talk.”

Dana Tai Soon Burgess & Company, Washington, D.C.
Know for Asian-inspired works and visual clarity, Dana Tai Soon Burgess & Company debuted its first piece in 1992 and has performed at top national venues such as The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center Out of Doors and the Kaye Playhouse in New York City. The company has received numerous commissions from organizations including the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, The Kennedy Center, Washington Performing Arts Society and more. Founder Dana Tai Soon Burgess’s repertoire has performed in 11 countries and continues to tour nationally and internationally.

Daniel Burkholder / The PlayGround, Hyattsville, MD
Daniel Burkholder / The PlayGround create highly physical works that combine the formalism of choreography and spontaneity of improvisation. The company received the Local Dance Commission from The Kennedy Center to create together /apart (we go each our way). The PlayGround has performed at The Kennedy Center, Dance Place, The H Street Playhouse, The Warehouse Theatre and throughout the Washington, D.C. area. Daniel Burkholder / The PlayGround is a resident company at Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mount Rainier, MD, where it holds rehearsals, classes and performances.

Maryland Youth Ballet, Silver Spring, MD
Since 1971, the mission of the Maryland Youth Ballet (MYB) has been to provide the highest caliber of training and performance opportunities to prepare young dancers for a career in the performing arts as well as to provide classes to dancers of all ages and levels in the community. The children’s program puts deliberate emphasis on pre-professional achievement with each level carefully crafted to provide the most comprehensive training and coaching in order to produce the high quality dancers for which MYB is known.

Step Afrika, Washington, D.C.
Step Afrika is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Founded in 1994, the company is critically acclaimed for its efforts to promote an understating of and appreciation for stepping and the dance tradition’s use as an educational tool for young people worldwide. Step Afrika reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year and had performed on many stages in North & South America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. Step Afrika conducts residencies, master classes and in-school performances for The Kennedy Center, Washington Performing Arts Society, the Smithsonian Institution and other organizations around the world.

Ziva’s Spanish Dance Ensemble, Potomac, MD
Ziva’s Spanish Dance Ensemble was established in 1995 by its founder and artistic director Ziva Cohen, who is well known in the Washington, D.C. dance community as both a flamenco artist, teacher and neo-classical choreographer of Spanish dance. The ensemble has performed extensively in the northeast to laudatory reviews by the dance critics and to the delight of audiences. The Ensemble features a repertoire that ranges from fiery and seductive to traditional and regional. Ziva blends traditional Spanish dance with other ethnic dance forms which in past years has resulted in rousing public acclaim.
