Jury

The 2008 Bethesda Painting Awards will be juried by Timothy App, Dr. Anne Collins Goodyear and Reni Gower.

Timothy App earned a Master of Fine Arts from Tyler School of Art at Temple University.  During his 32 years of teaching, he has taught at Pomona College in California, the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and since 1990 at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Most recently, his work from the last seven years was the subject of an exhibition at Goya Contemporary in Baltimore, where his paintings and prints are represented.  App is a recipient of a NEA fellowship in painting, as well as an individual artist's grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.  Twice he has received the Trustee's Award for Excellence in Teaching at MICA, and has been nominated for the Richard C. Diebenkorn Teaching Fellowship.

Dr. Anne Collins Goodyear is assistant curator of Prints and Drawings at the National Portrait Gallery and serves on the Board of Directors of the College Art Association. Goodyear received her doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin, in 2002, and wrote her dissertation on “The Relationship of Art to Science and Technology in the United States, 1957-1971: Five Case Studies.” Goodyear has spoken and been widely published on art of the 20th century. Her current exhibition projects include “Inventing Marcel Duchamp: The Dynamics of Portraiture” and 20 th-century self-portraiture on paper, featuring selections from the Portrait Gallery’s Ruth Bowman and Harry Kahn Twentieth-Century American Self-Portrait Collection.

Reni Gower is a Professor in the Painting and Printmaking Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. She was recently recognized by the Southeastern College Art Conference with the 2007 Award of Excellence in Teaching. In addition to her teaching, she curates award winning traveling exhibitions. Her most recent project is The Divas and Iron Chefs of Encaustic. Her art work has been showcased at international and national venues for over 25 years. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including a NEA / SECCA Southeastern Artist Fellowship and Virginia Commission for the Arts Project Grants.
